The state is offering a way to help those tempted to eat badly and overeat during the holidays. Most holiday foods, the State Department of Health said, aren't the best for the waistline. But just in time for the holidays, the Health Department is offering a free online cookbook full of healthy recipes. "But they are in all kinds of categories: main dishes, soups, appetizers," said Tennessee Commissioner of Health Susan Cooper. Cooper said the cookbook was created as a way to help people discover how to cook healthy meals while on a budget.
"The great thing is they all taste great. We had them tested by high school students, and we thought, 'Well, healthful foods that kids will eat are better than healthful foods that they won't,'" she said. Cooper also has advice on how to work off calories at home and at work. "If I'm on a conference call, I stand up and lift weights and march while I am trying to pay attention to what's going on," she said. Cooper also recommends choosing a smaller dinner plate during a meal.
